Frequently Asked Questions

What is the MVR System?

The Motor Vehicle Records (MVR) System provides a way for the LTP Fleet office to ensure driver compliance and vehicle safety. It allows authorized users to submit and track motor vehicle record requests.

What is an MVR?

It is your driving record history from the issuing authority.

How often is my MVR (Motor Vehicle Record) checked?

You are notified by email to renew either yearly or upon your driver's license expiration date.

What are the guidelines to operate a vehicle on behalf of the U-M?

  • Current valid license with no restrictions
  • No current suspensions or revocations
  • At least 18 years old
  • Faculty, staff, student, or contracted employee under the direct supervision of a U-M staff member
  • 6 or fewer points on your motor vehicle record based on the Michigan Motor Vehicle Code traffic violation point system

What is a shortcode?

The shortcode is a 6-digit number that allows us to bill the correct department for the Motor Vehicle Record check. Please check with your business office on the correct shortcode for your department or organization.

Why is a shortcode needed?

All MVR checks for any state outside of the State of Michigan are subject to a state and processing fee. LTP Fleet Services uses an outside supplier for MVR checks and the fees incurred are passed along to the requester's department or organization.

How do I submit an MVR request?

After logging in, navigate to Submit Request from the menu. Fill out the required information including your driver's license details and shortcode, then submit the form for processing.

How can I check the status of my request?

You can use the Status Lookup page to check request status without logging in, or view your requests from My Requests in the menu after logging in.

What is a delegate?

A delegate is someone you authorize to be notified when you have submitted a new request, and when your request status changes. You must have at least one verified delegate before submitting requests. You can manage your delegates from the Delegates section on the menu.

How do I remove myself as a delegate?

  1. Click on the Update/Add Delegate button on the home page
  2. Update/Add Delegate button
  3. To delete all delegate users, click on the Delete All button
  4. Delete All button
  5. To delete individual delegate users, click on the red delete button next to the user's name
  6. Delete individual delegate button

What documents are required?

Required documents may vary by state. Visit the Documents page to see state-specific requirements and download necessary forms.

How do I log in?

University of Michigan users can log in using their university credentials via Shibboleth. External users can use the passwordless login option with their registered email address.

How long does it take to process an MVR check request?

2-3 business days, but some provinces or territories, like Puerto Rico, can take 30-60 days.

Can I submit a request on behalf of someone else?

No. Since the information provided is personal and confidential and each driver is required to authorize and acknowledge the MVR request, we require each individual to complete their own request.

What is the processing fee amount?

$1.58, in addition to each individual state's cost to run an MVR check. The cost varies by state.

Can I check someone else's status?

Yes. Use the status lookup feature. You will need the individual's uniqname.

What State or Province requires additional authorization to process an MVR check?

Alaska, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, New Hampshire, Northwest Territories, Nova Scotia, Nunavut, Ontario, Pennsylvania, Prince Edward Island, Puerto Rico, Saskatchewan, Washington, and Yukon Territory.

For my out-of-state MVR authorization form, can I use an electronic and/or a printed signature?

Unfortunately, no. Our vendor requires a handwritten signature on all authorization forms.

Where do I send my completed out-of-state authorization form?

Please send your completed form to mvr-check@umich.edu.

I just received an approval a few months ago. Why am I now receiving an email that says my MVR check is expired?

Be sure to read the explanation in the expired MVR check notification email. Most likely, your driver's license expired after you submitted your MVR check for its annual renewal.

I'm getting an error message saying I have an invalid uniqname in my MVR check submission and my MVR check is unable to be processed.

Please make sure you have ONLY a uniqname in the delegate/supervisor field. The system will not accept a full email address or a full name.

Who do I contact for help?

For questions or assistance, please contact the LTP Fleet office at mvr-check@umich.edu or 734-764-3428.
